Cheyenne Marie Mize at Duffy’s | Photo Essay

photos by Matthew Masin | words by Michael Todd

Cheyenne Marie Mize says she can't take her eyes off the television as she plays Wednesday night at Duffy's. She can't help but feel like fighting as the MMA men duke it out onscreen with fists and feet a-flyin'.

It's a good thing the Kentucky native brought her fiercer set to play among the four other bands scheduled because it's not often that a Wednesday night packs in so many punches. Sure, the powerful genre-jumper has recent experience with performing through a thunderstorm of sound. HN reporter Hilary Stohs-Krause caught her in Austin at South by Southwest just two weeks ago.

But with a last-minute addition of Minnesota-based Brian Wheat and three Lincoln bands to follow her — Good Show Great Show, Eli Mardock and Tie These Hands — it's a good thing Mize brought her sunburst Gibson, her white Epiphone, her piano and a large family of drums to blow down a growing crowd.

Scroll down for photos as well as an interview with Brian Wheat. Because it was a school night, like a responsible editor, I sent our photographer home early, so please submit your artistic reproductions of Tie These Hands' set for consideration. A hearty handshake and a smile will reward you for your work.

Brian Wheat

If Brian Wheat had any crawdads left from dinner on Tuesday night, this is how he would have taken (lighthearted) revenge on our Andy and Angie Norman. After he played Omaha's Barley Street Tavern, the Minnesota-based-by-way-of-Buffalo musician had planned on staying at the HN Hostel, but when that didn't pan out, he slept in his car. Here's his story:
