When I first contacted Hear Nebraska’s managing editor, Michael Todd, I thought it was a shot in the dark to ask him to create a marketing/design internship. I had enough experience to hold my own with marketing and design work, but I had no clue how to execute it within the music community. Hear Nebraska gave me the platform to learn how to design concert posters, write music-based social media postings, and how to work information booths.

The most influential piece of my internship, though, was receiving edits on my designs from the HN team. Fielding critiques from Eric Nyffeler (Doe Eyed) helped develop my design work into a cleaner, stronger vision and increased my awareness of the many different possibilities of programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. When designing the poster for a show featuring A Ferocious Jungle Cat, Nyffeler guided me through the process of incorporating my own hand-drawn art and patterns within a computer program. Having Nyffeler to fall back on for direction and questions guided my design work to have a more personal style and notable emphasis on my art.

Going into this internship, I knew my writing skills were subpar, but Michael and Andy were able to give me tips throughout the summer that have helped my writing substantially. I learned how to compose social media posts that were eye-catching and direct. Their advice and examples drastically improved my writing for new media, a very important aspect of marketing.

The people behind Hear Nebraska are fighting for something they believe in to their bones — the uniqueness of Nebraska’s culture and music scene — and I became instantaneously infected with their passion. They push you to execute your best work.

Just sit down with Andy and Angie Norman, and listen to the stories of Hear Nebraska’s birth. I bet you’ll have inspiration pouring out of you, too.

RECOMMENDATION:

by Michael Todd, Hear Nebraska's managing editor

Emily was a pleasure to work with as a summer marketing intern for Hear Nebraska. As our first intern dedicated to designing posters, social media content and helping manage our booth at events, she impressed us consistently with her keen eye for design and energetic spirit for outreach.

Without a physical workplace, our nonprofit requires interns to work remote for the most part, and Emily communicated effectively. In helping to share posts promoting Nebraska concerts, she developed a sharper sense of how to write online copy. She also excelled at concepting ideas for promotional videos, activities at events and marketing plans.

From the smaller tasks of hanging flyers for our street team to large projects such as constructing a timeline of news items tracking Hear Nebraska's growth over 2 1/2 years, Emily completed her duties with aplomb. It is with full confidence in her skills, and ability to learn quickly, that I recommend her for any marketing position.
