Krystal Sidzyik, HN Editorial Intern | Portfolio

testimonial by Krystal Sidzyik

My interview to be a writing intern for Hear Nebraska took place at Blue Line Coffee in Dundee.

It was the first time I had met Andy, and I was terribly nervous. But as soon as I sat down and we started discussing the types of opportunities Hear Nebraska could present me, I was at ease. I wanted to be a part of this growing nonprofit in any way I could.

I didn’t mind that it was unpaid. I wanted to cultivate my craft and I knew under the guidance of Andy and Michael, I would learn to hone my writing skills and take them to the next level. Throughout my internship, I received thorough critiques and ample feedback. As a writer, this was important to me because I wanted to learn.

Through Hear Nebraska, I was able to create compelling stories and accompany them with photography. I was also given the opportunity to meet and connect with really cool people. Every time I interview for a new position, Hear Nebraska is what piques the interviewer’s attention most. And then I can’t help but gush about the incredible experience I had as a writing intern.

RECOMMENDATION:

by Michael Todd, Hear Nebraska’s managing editor

Krystal proved herself as a smart, young journalist with a knack for not only consistently producing stories on deadline but always resolving edits thoroughly. Over the course of her editorial internship with Hear Nebraska in 2012, she showed a great passion for her work and a keen interest in tackling new projects and adding to her already impressive skillset.

Whether it was her concert previews, her news items or her larger final project — which examined Omaha record stores in-depth in three well-written parts — Krystal gave her all. And through it all, she communicated effectively online, as her internship was carried out remotely. Plus, she showed a strong ability to tell stories visually, with her photography work as well.

Because of her tireless work ethic and well-rounded talents, I recommend her for an editorial position in any media organization.
