PICKS OF THE WEEK – COMING SHOWSDID YOU HEAR? PROJECTS

PICKS OF THE WEEK
* signifies from out of town; bold signfies the band has at least one female member

Saturday, March 3

*OK Sweetheart with Eli Mardock and Rusty Maples at Duffy's Tavern, 1412 O St. in Lincoln at 6 p.m.; all ages; $5

Indie-folk-'60s pop group OK Sweetheart's debut full-length "Homes" is a collaboration with members of Midlake, Elizabeth and the Catapult, The Polyphonic Spree and Via Audio. Quite the pedigree. It's like Billie Holiday meets the Shins meets Laura Gibson, with a healthy spalsh of the Chiffons. Smart, snappy, melodic pop.

OK Sweetheart:

*The Good Foot w/ Making Movies at the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. in Lincoln at 10 p.m.; 21+; $8

Kansas City soul as delicious as grilling on a hot summer day. A younger, more earnest, less burdened Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, The Good Foot makes clear, cheerful, at-times raucous soul jams. They packed the Zoo Bar last time they came to town: This is a do-not-miss show. (Making Movies may or may not be a Dire Straits cover band?)

The Good Foot:

Sunday, March 4

*Boom Chick w/ *White Mystery, Dads and Snake Island! at the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. in Lincoln at 9 p.m.; 21+; $5

Boom Chick wrote a song with lyrics taken straight from the directions on a can of spray paint; White Mystery describes themselves as "redhead sibling rockers induce sonic whiplash." Fierce, badass and unabashedly tongue-in-cheek, with solid local supporting acts. This ain't your grandma's Sunday night.

Boom Chick:

White Mystery:

Tuesday, March 6:

*The Mynabirds with The Sleepover and Son of 76 at the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. in Lincoln at 10 p.m.; 21+; $8

The Mynabirds, a collective fronted by Omahan Laura Burhenn, is releasing their second album in June on Saddle Creek. The first was one of my favorites of 2011 (think Appalachian Motown), and "Generals," the first song released from the forthcoming album of the same name, holds the promise of great (and darker) things to come. This show is a kick-off for the group's East Coast tour.

PROJECTS

This is for items that are based more on community and less on strict performance. (Some might only indirectly be related to music, apart from the fact that the women involved are active in Nebraska's music scene.)

Soup & Cinema free film, food and discussion series

Four not-for-profit groups and organizations are partnering with House of Loom to present four films celebrating women in the arts (including music) every Wednesday in March for 2012’s Women’s History Month. Screenings are free, including soup, with in-kind donations encouraged for Lydia House for Women and Children in Omaha (women's toiletries, baby items).

Soup will be served at 6:30p.m. while it lasts. Each film will start at 7 p.m., hosted and sponsored by the following organizations, all at House of Loom, 1012 S. 10th St. in Omaha, with informal discussions to follow each film:

March 7: "I Read About My Death in Vogue Magazine"
Nebraska Feminist Network

March 14: "Who Does She Think She Is?"
Les Femmes Folles: Nebraska Women in Art

March 21: "Desk Set"
Whatever Mathers!

March 28: "Shut Up and Sing!"
X-Rated: Women in Music
