Thirst Things First and Peelander-Z @ Knickerbockers | Photo Essay

There’s a few things you can expect to see at a Thirst Things First show. First of all, a hologram character will be prominently on a television commanding the audience to “CONSUME OIL,” which transitions into songs about the band’s dead neighbor, cats and eating fish. Secondly, you’ll see pretty much everyone, especially Thirst Things First, with a drink in their hand. Sometimes, that's the oil.

On a tame billing, Thirst Things First's conceptual hook can be a lot of oil to swallow, but on Thursday at Knickerbockers they found a perfect marriage, sharing the venue with New York City’s Peelander-Z, their extravagant costumes and their taste for jumping rope in the crowd.

In front of a well-lubricated crowd, Thirst Things First kicked off the party with their fast-paced punk rock. Here is the night recapped in photos:

Thirst Things First

The Japanese punk band Peelander-Z, who like Thirst Things First claims to hail from extraterrestrial locale, took the stage clad in animalistic and cartoonish dress. Most the of the songs were in the format of we-say-this, you-say-that and lyrics included, “Tacos, Tacos, Tacos,” and the ABCs. Intercut with the songs were shenanigans of dance, crowd members on stage and bouts of jumping rope.
