Verbal Gumbo Spoken Word at House of Loom | Video Feature

video and words by Mike Machian

Verbal Gumbo is a monthly spoken word performance held every third Thursday at the House of Loom.  On April 18, several performers "blessed the mic" with pieces that were read off from the screens of phones and iPads as well as the old standby: paper.

The highlight of the evening was a performance from Verbal Gumbo regular Ruth Marimo whose book, Freedom of an Illegal Immigrant, is attracting attention from a national publisher. Marimo talked about how her experiences shaped her book and her plans for an upcoming children's book on what it is like to live in Africa:
